Basic Guidelines About the Frequency of Treatment with the Stimpod NMS460

3 treatments usually demonstrate changes in most conditions. You should treat 5 to 10 minutes on each treatment area. If changes are slight but positive, you should continue for 6 to 12 treatments. Treatments can be 1x, 2x or 3x weekly but preferably 1x or 2x weekly. If success is obtained and pain resolves (100% pain relief or resolution), the treatment can be terminated. If success is obtained and pain resolves (30-50%) then continue 1x weekly for 6 to 12 weeks until resolution or until the patient feels that they no longer require treatment If you see improvement but it remains between 10 and 30%, stop treatment for 1 month. If there are some visible positive changes after 1 month has passed, then resume with initial treatments. If there are no visible positive changes, use a different treatment site or stimulate a different nerve.

Does the stimpod affect differently hyper or hypotonic muscles?

In cerebral palsy, each type (hypertonic and hypotonic) stem from different parts of the brain. When you treat the peripheral nervous system, both types may see improvement. It is surmised that induced changes in the peripheral nervous system (like changes resulting from TPRF stimulation from the Stimpod) will have a positive effect on the central nervous system.

The guidelines use the 2hz frequency. How does the results change from 1 and 10 hz frequencies and in what cases should It be considered to use It?

Interesting question. Have a look at this published case report of the Stimpod NMS460 used for foot drop. The frequency was set at 5Hz

Stimulus intensity reactions

I have applied the stimpod to almost every patient I had in months. Works great but noticed some hypersensitive reactions with a small population in the peroneal and tibial nerves. Most people have a pretty similar intensity thresholds. I have come across 3-4 people so far where the stimulus is felt like a really sharp pain through the nerve at low intensities, painful even in 2-3 mA. Any other users with these findings? Open to discuss and debate why.

Post-fusion patient

I have a post-fusion patient. Surgery was 1 year ago. L1/L2. He has persistent right-sided pain. His instrumentation from L3 to S1 was removed at the same time. I used the Stimpod on the facet joints of L1, L2, and L4. Those were the most painful points. Since then, his pain is now centre lumbar and coccygeal. It is more intense and he is more aware of this pain with movement. I used 2Hz 0.2 ms and 8mA for 5 min. Could this be an overstimulation at the dorsal horn? What can be expected? It is now 5 days and his pain is still higher than before. Your input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Hi Cheryl How many treatments has the patient had? If only 1 then we may need to wait for a week. If you continue treating start working on distal points – femoral nerve adjacent to the femoral blood supply and also the sciatic nerve in the glutes on the side of pain. Also don't stimulate the actual area of pain but rather nerve supply in muscles adjacent to L1 to L3.

I would like some help, please. I have a patient with knee pain when running. I have treated him 3 times with the Stimpod and the pain is better, but at times sporadically, it's so bad he can't even drive. The othopod said it's a nerve being pinched. I used the Stimpod on the lateral side of the knee and also behind the knee, but his pain got worse.

Where is the pain? If it's anterior knee pain, use the infrapatellar branch of saphenous in the lower aspect of the VMO. Even if pain is in lateral aspect of patellar. If the pain is posterior then use the sciatic nerve just after it’s bifurcation in the hamstring superior to posterior knee crease.

Hi Cathy!For Parkinson's they stimulate (via implanted electrodes) the subthalamic nucleus, which is a structure deep inside the brain. I don't know if someone has had a patient that experienced some symptom relief by stimulating the Vagus nerve, perhaps? There might be a beneficial effect through VNS.. According to the link above it may help with gait and reaction times, but not necessarily tremor…

For a labrum tear in the hip (no surgery yet), where should the active electrode be placed?

You can treat the femoral nerve and the free nerve endings in the labrum that may be accessed between the pelvis and the acetabular region when the patient is side lying. The femoral nerve is accessed in supine adjacent to the femoral blood vessels – feel for the pulse in the region.
